A Contract for Difference is a derivative that lets two parties exchange the difference in an asset's price between the moment a position is opened and the moment it is closed. The trader never owns the underlying asset. This structural choice is what allows retail environments such as IFCM Invest to offer exposure to indices, commodities, cryptocurrencies and equities without the friction of physical settlement.

Why CFDs Exist

CFDs solve two practical problems. They provide leveraged exposure to markets that would otherwise require large capital commitments, and they allow symmetrical long and short positioning without the borrow logistics that short-selling physical shares would require. The trade-off is that CFDs carry overnight financing costs, and those costs compound over multi-day horizons in a way that meaningfully reduces the profitability of swing strategies.

The Costs You Will Actually Pay

Spread, commission, overnight swap and, in some cases, an inactivity fee — these are the four line items every CFD trader eventually encounters. Any independent review should reconstruct the total cost of a representative trade rather than quoting only the headline spread. A tight spread paired with an unfavorable swap rate can produce worse aggregate cost than a wider spread with neutral financing.

Regulatory Context

CFD availability varies sharply by jurisdiction. Retail CFDs are restricted or banned in certain markets and heavily capped in others. Before evaluating any platform, including IFCM Invest, verify eligibility in your own jurisdiction using the relevant regulator's public register.
